2022 State Achievement Award Winners

Service to Society
Jill Snyder, Alpha Epsilon/2 in Salem, is a very active member of DKG. She has served at the chapter level in many offices, including serving as co-president for two biennia. She started as Chapter Treasurer in 2010 and continues today. She participates in planning programs, making our chapter basket(s) for State Conventions / Conferences and leading virtual game nights.
At the state level, Jill served as Administrative Secretary for four state presidents: Bridget Honan, Alice Reichle-Hartness, Kathy Martell, and Dr. Cindy Ryan. Because of her expertise in math and computer skills, she was able to accomplish all her duties, which were a lot, while still teaching and raising a family.
Jill has attended many International Conventions and Conferences. In 2009, the International Conference was in Portland, Oregon. Jill and another chapter member were responsible for the Hospitality Room. In 100-degree weather, they were able to make the Hospitality Room the place to be throughout the conference. That meant a lot of pre-planning and late-night trips to the store for breakfast items the next day.
Jill has endless energy and talents she shares with DKG and deserves the Service to Society Award.

Barbara Smutz has been active in Zeta Chapter, serving on committees, and as Communication Chairman (writing their newsletters), and as vice-president and president for three biennia.
As a Special Ed teacher, she developed a social interaction program for special need students in her county. She has been involved with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts for 10 years and with 4-H for 25 years. She has served on Union County's Fair Board for 20 years, during 3 of which she was the board president. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Award 4 years in a row as well as earning the Ackerman Service Award.
Zeta Chapter and Union County are thankful to Barbara for her dedicated service. The Oregon State Organization is proud to award Barbara Smutz the 2022 Service to Community Award

Dr. Cindy Ryan, Alpha Epsilon/5 in Salem, is a past Oregon State President and is currently a Professor of Early Childhood & Special Education at Western Oregon University. Cindy’s Service to Education is unique as she trains teachers and is working with children from birth through university.
As a professor, Cindy is collaborating to develop a state-wide Center for Early Childhood that focuses on justice, equity, and inclusion. Topics she addresses are ableism, gender equity, advancing race, equity, and social justice in early childhood. She is on a state leadership team on early childhood inclusion and is both a published author and has designed online workshops. Cindy organized an exchange at WOU with students from China in 2017. Since 2014, she has been director of the Early Childhood Inclusion Summer Institute at WOU and created a bridge program for transferring community college students at WOU. She works with the Marion Polk Early Learning Hub, the Northwest Down Syndrome Association, was on the Chemeketa Community College Early Childhood advisory board, serves on the Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education Higher Education Consortium, and more. Dr. Ryan is active in multiple councils and professional organizations.

Service to Society
Priscilla Ing (Lambda Chapter) Priscilla Ing has been active in the society since she became a member 19 years ago. She works tirelessly on chapter projects, has served on chapter committees, chairing 2 of them, and has been Lambda's Co-president for the past 3 bienniums. At the state level, Priscilla has become one of our “go-to” leaders. She has organized panels and events for conferences and conventions. She has been a District Coordinator and chair of the State Awards Committee for 3 bienniums. Priscilla has been serving on the board for The Alpha Rho Foundation since 2020. She has been described as a planner, organizer, and quiet leader. She is a master at encouraging, mentoring, and involving others. Oregon State Organization is proud to recognize Priscilla Ing and thank her for her service to the society. |
Service to Community
Dana Murphy (Beta Beta Chapter) Dana Murphy has served DKG at the chapter and state levels; she is currently contributing at the international level with the U.S. Forum. She is a member of Tigard's Community Response Team and also volunteers with the Tigard Rotary Club in various service projects. She has prepared and served meals for the past 6 years at Just Compassion Resource Center in Tigard. Dana has volunteered to lead community workshops and discussion groups regarding topics on Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Understanding Poverty. For the past 8 years, she has served on the Leadership Team and volunteered in many capacities at the Bethlehem House of Bread food pantry and center in Metzger. Bertha Haas (Psi Chapter) Since establishing the Huruma School for special needs children in Tanzania, in 2004, Bertha Haas has worked tirelessly to raise money for the school's operations, supplies, and improvements. Her programs have helped the students to grow and to become contributors to their society. Bertha has raised the Tanzania government's awareness of the worth of their special needs children. Bertha has dedicated her retirement years to the goals of the school she had founded. Oregon State Organization is proud to recognize Bertha Haas and thank her for her service to education. |
Cornetet Individual Professional Development Awarded to Shirley Lomax
"Shirley Lomax, Alpha Epsilon Chapter, received a Cornetet Individual Professional Development Award from The DKG International Educational Foundation, to attend the National Council for Social Studies 98th Annual Conference in Detroit this December.
