Manjula Bhatia
Isabelle Huston Commemorative Scholarship
Manjula Bhatia, Beta Beta My name is Manjula Bhatia. I have been part-time faculty at Portland Community College in Computer Science for last two years. Thank you so much for awarding me the Isabelle Huston Commemorative Scholarship for a PCC Study Abroad program this summer. The program is a 9-week Introduction to Entrepreneurship, including two weeks in Prague. It introduces the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship and encourages an "entrepreneurial mindset." This scholarship amount will cover my living expenses for the two weeks in Prague. My focus will be on learning new ideas to enhance the learning experience for my students, who come with different majors, and would like to see convergence of technology subjects with other domains like commerce, music, gaming, art, and fashion. I have often found that by stepping out of my zone, I am able to meet new people and get new ideas. I would also explore the feasibility of taking my technology class in study abroad model in 2026. Karren Timmermans PhD
Emma Henkle Scholarship
Karren Timmermans PhD, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Oregon State’s Organization for awarding me the Emma Henkle Scholarship to attend an AI Conference in Porto, Portugal. Porto sits at the mouth of the Douro River, the largest river in the Iberian Peninsula. With a long, rich history, dating back to the 2nd century BCE as a Roman outpost, Porto was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage in 1996. Grapes for port wine, named for Porto, are grown along the Douro River, positioning Porto for bottling, export, and local consumption. The International Conference on Computer Supported Education provides a space for teachers and scholars to share and discuss the newest educational tools and environments, and innovative technology-based teaching and learning strategies. The five conference areas include: Artificial Intelligence in Education, Information Technologies Supporting Learning, Learning/Teaching Methodologies and Assessment, Social Context and Learning Environments, and Ubiquitous Learning. The conference addresses the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 education, particularly in the planning and teaching activities of classroom teachers and the learning experiences of students. From the conference, I hope to more deeply address the importance for teacher educators to stay informed about technological trends, specifically focusing on the integration of AI tools as thought partners in teaching and learning. Despite acknowledging that AI cannot replace the unique qualities of a classroom teacher, we can help to ensure that teacher candidates develop the skills needed to effectively utilize AI. AI is already contributing to teaching and learning by assisting with various tasks such as refining arguments, preparing materials, developing assessments, supporting multilingual students, and enhancing problem-solving and creative thinking skills. Recommendations from educational professionals suggest embracing AI to enhance learning, improve productivity, generate and organize content, rethink issues like cheating and plagiarism, and address learning gaps. |
